Hey yo,
Don't you call this a regular jam, Murder Mystery is headlining
"Vicious" at Rothko this Tuesday night.  The show features four up and coming NY bands out of which we are clearly the best looking.  Come to hear new MM songs about such classic songwriting topics as perverted fantasies and coffee, stay for the chance to meet the lead singer upon which the character from 40 year Old Virgin was based.  We play at 10:30, but show starts at 8, so get there early to help us carry our equipment.

friday night fun

Hi all:

Ted Leo + Pharmacists are playing a free concert at South Street Seaport tonight @ 7:00pm. The weather's supposed to be nice, so why not make an evening of it (as well as a little pre-bday celebration for our Miss Kindberg)? We could gather some snacks, a bottle of wine (or a flask of moonshine), lie back and listen to some tunes, then follow that up with some drinks/food out on the town. (Word on the street is that the errant Anna Cheung will supposedly be making an appearance later tonight at Fat Black Pussycat (130 W 3rd St)!)

PS - MARK YOUR CALENDARS - Seattle's "premier party rock super group," the septet known as United State of Electronica (U.S.E.), is coming to town in October. Get your dancing shoes ready!

Thursday at Tonic

my friend rob's band, apothecary hymns, is playing a show tomorrow night at tonic at 8:00pm.

http://www.tonicnyc.com/
Apothecary Hymns plus Christopher Ziter (of the Essex Green) plus The Glaciers plus El Alto
$8

Apothecary Hymns: "Apothecary Hymns effortlessly glides around the imaginary triangle that connects country, folk and psychedelia; the deftly restrained way Stimmel brings his numerous instruments and influences to bear - often tilting in one direction or another without fully committing to any - makes the album seem fully contemporary... Regardless of each song's inclinations the album's careful framing unifies their sundry elements into a well-formed whole."--Time Out NY

Esthero & the Brazilian Girls

You guys!

Would anyone be interested in going to the Esthero/Brazilian Girls show at Irving Plaza?? http://www.irvingplaza.com/bands/bio.php?ID=1770

Wed, Sept. 14 at 8pm. $25.

Ok I suck at reviewing things, but if you don't know of them--if I had to describe or categorize them, I'd say that Esthero used to lean more towards lounge/trip-hop but her new album and new sound lean closer to jazz/funk/r&b. Her album, Breath From Another, is one of my fave albums of all freakin time!! And the Brazilian Girls, also a trip-hoppy/jazzy/loungy kinda sound. And they've kinda got this tongue-in-cheek/overtly sexual thing goin on which I think is awesome. And only one of them is a girl actually.

Lemme know!!

2 Bloc Party Tix available

Hi kids -

I have two extra tickets to the Bloc Party (feat. the Kills, Noisettes) concert on 9/9/05 at the Roseland Ballroom. Instead of scalping them on Ebay, yours truly is taking the high (and not-so-illegal) road by offering them up to you for face value-$32/ticket, which includes all of Ticketmaster's friggin' fees. Let me know if you're interested!

Coffee

I know, I know this is supposed to be about music. In fact, I wish this were an all buttrock blog...okay, now I'm really off-topic. Anyway. Does anyone want to go in with me on buying some decent f*cking coffee? I am officially over the whole Folgers/Starbuck's Ridiculo Blend. I'm willing to put in a couple of dollars a month for some decent coffee. Despite some very real Gerry Fear, I'm putting this out there.

Discuss.

A guide to understanding Buttrock by Jeff Hinman

The goal of this post is to educate. If you read the post from top to bottom and click on all of the links you should be able to understand what buttrock is and that it's definition was always neatly tucked away in your brain just waiting for a single word to pull it all together.

Let's start with a buttrock free association: camaros, beer, long hair, mullets, cinder blocks, leather pants, shitty beer, head banging, t-tops, county fairs, 1988....

Very good!. Now look at this amazon.com Buttrock wishlist: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/listmania/list-browse/-/1NPBQ9WJHA3O3/102-2621862-3573752

While it isn't a complete list it should provide you with an idea of what it takes to be labelled a buttrocker.

Here are a few buttrock Haikus:

Fuck Diamond Dave
by J. Lawless

David Lee Roth
Makes me want to Puke and Crap
Disgrace to Metal.

Ode to Maiden
by J. Lawless

Galloping horses
I think of Iron Maiden
and all is well now.

Power chords are plentiful
No one loves the bass.

I lifted these from this site: http://www.threeimaginarygirls.com/hearsay92303buttrockhaikus.asp

For those of you that are visual learners: http://art.unknowncommunity.com/upimg/2992.jpeg

Think of Beavis & Butthead...explosions, babes, fire, rock...now you're getting it!

Now join this buttrock forum: http://buttrock.tribe.net/?r=10535 and make friends with these losers, they really do need friends!

mix tape club

i owe a couple people mix CDs on the floor. how about we organize a
mix CD club? i did this once with people across the country. every
week to two weeks, one person makes a mix for the entire club. points
are definitely given out for packaging design. i think it makes sense
to organize by theme... and to make it interesting. themes i could
cover would be [IDM/obscure electronic], [indie rock 101], [art rock],
and if i really had time and patience to work with my vinyl [mid 90s
hardcore punk/emo] from before the term emo was co-opted by ignorant
teenage weezer fans. i'd be interested in anyone who could make a
bluegrass mix, a folk/blues mix, a female jazz singers of the early
20th century mix, a new wave mix, a contemporary experimental classical
mix, etc...

who wants in?
