for you closet francophiles out there...

Wednesday, November 30, 6:30 p.m.:
French Studies colloquium, La Maison française, 16 Washington Mews

Special event: *PERSPECTIVES ON THE RIOTS IN FRANCE*

With:
*Herrick Chapman* (French Studies and History, NYU) (in English)
*Eric Klinenberg* (Sociology, NYU) (in English)
*Cyril Lemieux* (Sociology, EHESS) (in French)
*Emmanuelle Saada* (Historical Sociology, NYU & EHESS) (in English)
*Frédéric Viguier* (French Studies, NYU) (in English)

Moderated by *Stephane Gerson* (French & French Studies, NYU)

On October 27 the word spread in Clichy-sous-Bois - an unprivileged city
neighboring Paris - that two teenagers had died trying to escape a
police control. Within a few days, anti-police protests grew into riots
and spread across housing projects around Paris and other major cities.
After two weeks of nightly clashes and car burnings, the French
government established a "state of emergency". NYU sociologists and
historians will reflect on the social and political significance of
events: situating the riots into historical and economic perspective,
comparing them with racial riots in the US and further discussing issues
of class, race, and the role of the media in contemporary France.

Anyone like indie films?

Normally, Sundays around 4pm I'm napping, but this Sunday is special because my very good friend Marcos is showing his independent short film at the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival. So I'll be taking my Sunday afternoon nap on the road.

Marcos is Mexican and from New Mexico so right away you know this movie is gonna be a homerun!

The movie is called The Day the World Ended and it's billed as a family comedy. Here's a little synopsis of the flick as given to me by Marcos himself:

The Mora family is a traditional Catholic Hispanic family with a small house in the Martinez Town barrio of Albuquerque, New Mexico, during the time of 1950-something.

Chris Mora is a growing pre-teen boy with a huge crush on one of his classmates- his new feelings towards this girl of his dreams combined with her radiating beauty makes her so intimidating Chris cannot work up the nerve to talk to her. With the help of his younger brother, Isaac, a reckless plan is hatched to capture her affections- one that if not executed just right may have deadly consequences.

Auntie Naya Mora is an ornery old lady obsessed with praying to her Catholic Saints in her room in an apartment attached to the Martinez family house. She spends so much time praying and spending time with her precious Santos that there are suspicions afoot that she may be doing something else in her darkened room all that time - like indulging in the taboo activity of watching TV. But who knows?

The two character's longings for things and the way they go about attaining them certainly go against the culture and tradition of the era, and they are not without consequence when the lengths they go to get what they want collide in a wreck of a conclusion!

What: NY International Independent Film & Video Festival
When: Sunday, November 13th at 4:05pm

Wednesday! ROTHKO with The Shapes, The Upwelling, and Sky Pilots.

Hi.

In the biggest news of Election Week, we are pleased to announce that MM is making a late bid to be Mayor of New York City.   On Tuesday, please write-in "Murder Mystery."  We are the reason democracy was invented.

Then! On Wednesday night we will celebrate our victory with a show at ROTHKO so epic that it will go on even if we are not elected. Joining in the celebration will be good friends of ours -- the bands that helped us out either in our campaign or elsewhere.

So...

Wednesday November 9th!!!

ROTHKO!!!

116 Suffolk Street b/w Rivington and Delancy!!!

(!!! is not playing!!!)

8PM - The Shapes

http://www.theshapesband.com

They share a practice space with us and make excellent roommates.   If you have a room to fill in your apartment, we recommend taking all 5 members of The Shapes in.   Youll get sweet rock and roll in your ears and sweet people in your towels.

9PM - The Upwelling

http://www.theupwelling.com

Remember when Radiohead was the best band on earth? The Upwelling does, and their textured sounds will remind of the days when thom yorke didn't write songs called "brush your teeth" or "A Vampire at your door eats brains."  Plus, Conor, the keyboard player, is Adam's roommate.   We love Conor.

10PM - MM!!!!

Break out the champagne and caviar... Mayor MM rocks you from Gracie Manor via satellite…hopefully. If not, we'll be there in person.

11PM - Sky Pilots

http://www.sky-pilots.com

Rising from the ashes of Continent, Sky Pilots is the new outfit of Adam's pals from San Francisco.  They were forced to play last because the building may not sustain their tremendous rock and bulging triceps.

See you Wednesday.

Bye bye.
